A Little More Sense Required.
Esther McVey, Minister of State without Portfolio. Or as she is often billed, the "Common Sense" Minister, has decided to announce a few items of... nonsense?
Her edict from high is basically that civil servants shouldn't be wearing personal lanyards in work, or, as she put it a "random pick and mix".
Instead, there should be a "standard design reflecting we are all members of the Government delivering for the citizens of the UK".
The basic idea seems to be, that she wants rid of lanyards with rainbows to support the LGBT community etc. There may have been more, but I got fed up reading about it.
Her other area of concern is the number of diversity roles within the civil service, calling for them to only be in HR departments, with any other areas or external contracts relating to them needing to be signed off by the Minister.
What a load of old bollocks!
We have a Minister of the Crown, a supposedly serious and important role in the government of a first-world country, worried about Lanyards? Isn't that the role of an office manager somewhere?
If she's so concerned about the little details of the work of the civil service, could she have a word with the DVLA? Some of their forms are very small and hard to fill in.
Also, could you get HMRC to stop sending cheques when they owe money? A bit old-fashioned really, come on.
As for the diversity roles and the need to get rid of them, I'd start with the ministerial roles involving common sense instead, thankfully there seems to be only one, so it shouldn't be too hard.
The reality I think is obvious, this is a governement dead on its feet, slowly on its way out coming up with random BS to stoke culture wars or to just fill some time.
As I think of it, I probably could have saved some time and just said:
F*ck off, Esther!
