How's Kier's Week Going?
It looks like Sir Kier Starmer has been having a relaxing week. Doesn't it?
I believe it was about 120 of his MPs who had rebelled against the government's bill on disability benefits... oh dear. I won't go into my views on this again; I've made that clear in previous posts.
As it currently stands, as I write this, the governement's proposal for reform seems to be that those currently in receipt of PIP will not be affected by any changes, but those applying in the future will be.
It seems he liked the nickname he gained last year during the riots and wants to bring it back. Good ole' Two Tier Keir! I'm happy to oblige.
Jokes aide. That is exactly what it is creating, though, a two-tier benefit system. If you're disabled or sick now, you'll be supported better than anyone who finds themselves in the same situation down the road.
Or, even more strangely, I'm betting there will be a strong chance of people who are on PIP now, leaving it due to recovery or improvement in whatever caused them to claim it.
And then finding themsevles screwed if things reverse and suddenly they can't re-claim it for the same condition.
It's absurd.
All we can hope is that those MPs who are rebelling now won't back down for this half-arsed, probably slightly panic induced balls-up of a new proposal being put to them.
Do what's right for those who do and will require PIP in the future. I don't hold out too much hope, but it's the right, humane and caring thing to do.
