Reparations Rubbish
I saw something in the paper recently saying that a group have been to Brussels and the UK to try and encourage the payment of Reparations for the slave trade.
I have to say I find such an idea, as the title suggests, rubbish.
I cannot see any logistical way such a thing could be done. There are questions like how much would be paid? Who to? In what form would such things take?
More pertinent in my mind, why should current generations, who had no interest or role in the slave trade, be responsible for the actions of the past?
To me, it's like my Grandfather running over and killing someone years ago. Then, down the line, once I'm born, I'm expected to pay money to their descendants who have never met the person killed.
It just doesn't make sense!
Now, there are plenty of other areas you could suggest that Reparations are due. The Barbary slave trade, although quite different, the principle is the same.
Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe could be said to be the same in their relationship with Germany and Russia after the horrors of WWII and the Soviet Union.
All in all, basically a bad idea.
